Next: Ribeira Brava Prev: Seixal
Mt. Fanal was a fun little surprise to stumble upon.
The hike today involved a pretty big climb with all of my travel gear, along with the always present threat of missing your bus on Madeira.
The climb was up the back side of the valley where the lava flow emerges from. It was long and steep, but had it’s moments - like this tiny house randomly on the other side (see if you can find it)
as well as a naked European couple making out at 9am on one of the lookouts.
My route was pretty streamlined to make sure I didn’t miss the bus, but I kept seeing signs for “Mt Fanal” and got way too tempted not to go see.
On the way I a nice girl and her crew:
Mt Fanal ended up being pretty spectacular, but not for the reason you would expect - it was covered in these very unique looking trees that look like they are out of a haunted forest or something.

Then finally the pinnacle overlook, and a million steps down.
It was neat to be able to see the valley on the way
I did end up missing my bus - but it had an hour wait in Sao Vicente. I was able to get a taxi and meet it there.
And with that, I said goodbye to Seixal and the north coast, and headed towards Ribeira Brava.
