Stering is a historically significant city in the center of Scotland, said to bridge the highlands and lowlands together.

It is famous for Sterling Castle, a place for ancient kings and queens.

The castle is on top of a tall hill, and we spotted a very interesting structure in the distance.

After talking with some folks at the castle, they recommended we walked over - at my request not telling us what it was.

After getting there, we discovered it’s a monument to William Wallace, the Scottish warrior who fought against the British. His greatsword still preserved there.

History

Sterling was the site of the Battle of Sterling Bridge where - completely outnumbered - the Scots defeated the British army by tricking them into a trap.

They baited the British to cross the bridge, and destroyed it behind them, trapping half the army on the wrong side of the river - leading to a slaughter.

You can see the bend in the river where this happened from the tower.

We made sure to visit the rebuilt bridge on the way back.

Next stop, Glascow.
